PARTIES
Joseph Cooper of Ledbury, Herefordshire. Farmer. Edward Cooper late of Ledbury, Herefordshire. Baker but now of the Parish of Redmarley D'Abitot, Worcester. William Butt of Ledbury, Herefordshire. Grocer. William Hill of Lilly Hall, Parish of Ledbury. Farmer. Sidney Gregg of Ledbury, Herefordshire. Builder. SUBJECT Concerns the sale of a house in Ledbury. The document begins by telling us that the property was in the hands of James Cooper, Ironmonger, who died in 1801. He left it to his son Joseph Cooper (party to this Indenture) subject to an annuity payable to his daughter Elizabeth Poole, but Elizabeth died in 1811. In 1902 Joseph Cooper sold it to Samuel Cooper of Ledbury, Tanner, but Samuel died in 1827 leaving it to Joseph Cooper in his will. Joseph is now selling it to William Butt for £335. There is a Schedule of deeds relating to this property running from 1750 to 1798. It appears that it first came into the hands of James Cooper in 1789. Edward Cooper, William Hall and Sidney Gregg all appear as trustees only. We are specifically told that William Hill is a "trustee to bar dower named on behalf of William Butt". (The use of trusts to evade the wife's right to one third of the property as dower was a fairly standard device at this time. | ||||||||||||
