Henry HOUGHTON of Liverpool, Lancashire. Grocer.

SUBJECT
The document begins by reciting an Indenture of 1847 in which Henry Houghton and Ann Houghton mortgage property to Thomas Ashall, Thomas Stanley and Henry Stanley for £700. We are then told that Henry Stanley died in 1848, Thomas Stanley died in 1861 and Thomas Ashall died in 1872 leaving everything to Elizabeth Stanley.

It now seems that Ann Houghton and Henry Houghton owe '£1000 upwards' on this mortgage. Presumably, (I can't quite follow it), they are in default, so Elizabeth Stanley is selling the property. Curiously, she is selling it to the same Ann and Henry Houghton for £500! (I must have got this wrong, but that's what seems to be happening).

The property consists of:

1. A parcel of land in St Helens, Lancashire, on the East side of Hamer Street, with buildings now used for Stone Cutting with steam engine and boilers.

2. Parcel of land on the North side of Westfield Street (formerly Liverpool Street) and on the East side of Hamer Street.
