The document begins by reciting an Indenture of 1863 in which William Essery of Hatherleigh, Grocer, bought property in Hatherleigh. This William Essery died in 1869 leaving his property to his son John (party hereto), but John was required to make various payments to his brothers William and Henry, his brother in law William BARTLETT and his mother, Jane.
Now John Essery is mortgaging the property to Robert Puddicombe for £600. All the other members of the Essery family are parties to the contract in order to acknowledge that they give their permission.
The property consists of two dwelling houses and a shop forming part of a plot called REDDAWAYS in Hatherleigh, Devon.
In the 1916 Indenture, we are told that Robert Puddicombe died in 1896 leaving his wife Jemima as Executrix. At that time the mortgage is being repaid and the property reconveyed to John Essery.
