The document begins by reciting an indenture of 1863 in which Haworth Waddington mortgages property in Hapton near Padiham, Lancashire, to Samuel Ryder, John Whittam and John Leeming for £150. Then in this indenture of 1866 the mortgage is being transferred to Martha Garbett and at the same time increased to £200. Finally, a further indenture of 1888 has been added on the back of this document which records that the mortgage has been again transferred to Charles Waddington.
The property consists of a plot of 381 sq.yds on the West of the Old Highway Road from Padiham to Burnley. There is intended to be a new street on the South side of the plot."
NOTE: John Whittam is referred to in the text of the document but that he signs his name clearly, twice, as John Whitham.
